We’re excited to welcome you to the Office of the Vice President for Communications (OVPC) and the University of Michigan community. Whether you’re new to U-M or transitioning into a new role, this page is here to help you get started.
Below, you’ll find a simple guide to your first day, first week, and helpful resources to make your transition as smooth as possible. From setting up your workspace to meeting your new colleagues, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your supervisor or department administrator.
Get Your Mcard
If you are new to the university, you will need to get an Mcard, the official U-M identification card. You’ll use it all over campus to identify yourself as a member of the university community. It has many uses from building access to free bus rides to local discounts and use as an ATM/debit card.
New employees will generally obtain their first Mcard free during the Human Resources New Employee Orientation. Employees may also obtain their Mcards at an ID Issuing Station with a completed Mcard Request and Change form.

IT support
Get Connected: A Guide to U-M Technology Resources & Services
Any of the Michigan Creative, Michigan Media or Michigan Photography groups should email isssemail@umich.edu anytime they need support. This email address bypasses the 4-HELP service center and automatically assigns a ticket to the entire Central IT staff. Bill, as well as his three colleagues, are then alerted to any support needs you may have.
