Film: Me, the “Other”

This special screening of Me, the “Other” was co-sponsored by the Fleming DEI committee. This is part of our Expanding Horizons DEI series, so named because we wanted to offer more than lectures. We believe that this film continues a long tradition of socially active art. Whether it was Picasso’s Guernica or the Guerrilla Girls posters, great art pushes boundaries and challenges us to think differently.

Me, the “Other” was filmed on three college campuses in Washtenaw County, and reveals the inner and outer lives of twelve people living on the frontlines of prejudice by asking the questions we don’t discuss in classrooms, workplaces, and social places.

After the film, there was a brief discussion facilitated by Tina Jordan. Discussion prompts:

  • Which story did you find most compelling?
  • Identify and explain the specific parts of the story that you found compelling or enlightening.
  • Identify and explain why you found them interesting?
  • Why is it important to consider these stories?
