As you’re getting settled into your OVPC group, we encourage you to explore our website for a brief description of each department, our roles and how we work together. The links and information below also provide a good overview of our organization, work and locations across the university.
Our Organization
The Office of the Vice President for Communications reports to the Office of the President and is the only full-service strategic communications and marketing group exclusively dedicated to promoting the University of Michigan. We partner with departments on all three U-M campuses to develop and share the Michigan story.
Our division is led by VP for Communications Richie Hunter.
Our office serves the U-M community through the areas outlined below.
You can also view the profiles of OVPC leadership and our org chart to see the structure of organization.
Our Work
OVPC units work on hundreds of exciting projects and stories every year. In addition to quantity, we are also known for our expertise and quality — many of our teams are regularly recognized nationally for their award-winning work.
Our Film Office helps filmmakers find the perfect location at U-M and make all of the necessary arrangements for a smooth production on campus.
The Freedom of Information Act Office assists individuals seeking documents about the University’s business activities.
In addition to supporting the strategic priorities of the university and managing the U-M brand, our marketing groups are also able to operate on a “fee-for-service” basis to units because they can be hired by any U-M department, school or college to help them meet their marketing and communication needs.
Michigan Creative offers a full range of services including strategy, market research, communications planning, creative work, graphic design, web development, print materials, multimedia development, special projects, and digital marketing consultation and implementation.
Michigan Media provides full-service studio and on-location video production from concept and script development to event coverage, editing, post-production services, duplication and distribution.
Michigan Photography offers a variety of photography services (portraits, events, passports, etc.) and maintains a database of more than 400,000 university images that are available for purchase online.
OVPC manages the U-M gateway (umich.edu home page), and many other strategic websites that serve as front doors to U-M.
Our Social Media group known as UMSocial oversees the strategic direction and development of all university-wide social accounts, as well as college-, school- and program-level presences, to encourage collaboration, unified messaging, and proper brand representation. They also provide social media consultation services for schools, colleges and departments across the university.
Executive Communications works with both the Office of the Vice President for Communications and the Office of the President to develop executive speeches, remarks, presentations, letters and videos that express and support the president’s vision and goals for U-M.
Michigan News promotes public awareness about U-M around the globe through news releases, social media and videos. They have key contacts that collaborate with the communications groups in all of the schools and colleges to help them share their work, news and updates with the general public.
Michigan Public is the university’s National Public Radio station. With broadcast signals serving Ann Arbor/Detroit (WUOM), Grand Rapids/West Michigan (WVGR) and Flint (WFUM), the station originates and distributes news and information relating to the state, the nation and the world.
Our Office of Public Affairs develops communication strategies for important U-M priorities and initiatives, manages emerging public issues and crisis communications and responds to media inquiries involving U-M’s president and central administration.
Our internal communications team produces the University Record, an online daily and in print weekly newspaper that keeps U-M faculty and staff informed about what is happening across campus and throughout higher education.
Michigan News publishes “Michigan Today,” an online magazine for Michigan alumni.
